Competition Music Requirements – 2019

The following tune requirements are for the 2019 VPA competition season.

Please note:
If you’re entering Novice or D Grade competitions, tunes much be chosen tunes from the Novice and D Grade Set List (Light music and Piobaireachd). The tunes have been compiled by the VPA and piping tutors, and provide greater transparency of assesment for competitors, tutors and adjudicators.

Tunes must be submitted from the VPA Prescribed Tune List without alteration. Adjudicators will be assessing from manuscript.  Download the complete VPA Prescribed Tune List for Novice and D Grade – here

Tuning time
A, B & C Grade, 3-5 minutes of tuning is permitted on arrival to Element 1. Thereafter, up to 1 minute tuning is permitted between elements.


Competition 1 – Haileybury
A Grade
Element 1 2/4 March of 4 parts or more
Element 2 Strathspey and Reel, minimum 4 parts each
Element 3 Hornpipe and Jig, minimum 4 parts each
Player to submit 3 of each tune for judge to choose.

Piobaireachd – Players to submit 3 full tunes of their own choice and to play one full tune of the judge’s selection

B Grade
Element 1 2/4 March of 4 parts or more (submit 2 tunes for judge to choose from)
Element 2 Strathspey & Reel of 4 parts or more
Element 3 Hornpipe and Jig, minimum 4 parts each

Piobaireachd – Players to submit 2 tunes from the Set list and will be required to play 1 full tune of the judge’s selection.

C Grade
Element 1 2/4 March of 4 parts or more
Element 2 Strathspey and Reel, minimum 4 parts each
Element 3 Hornpipe and Jig, minimum 4 parts each

Piobaireachd – Full tune (tune selected from the Set List)

D Grade
Element 1 2/4 March of minimum 4 parts
Element 2 Strathspey and Reel of 2 parts each

Note the idea is to play the ground plus one variation in total. Therefore if the Ground has a thumb variation for example, then the thumb would suffice as the variation. If there is a Ground followed by a variation with Singling and a Doubling, only the Singling is required to be played.

Novice Grade
Element 1  2/4 March of 2 parts only
Element 2  6/8 March of 2 parts only

Competition 2 – Ballarat
A Grade
Element 1  2/4 March of 4 parts or more
Element 2  Strathspey and Reel, minimum 4 parts each
Element 3  2 x 6/8 Marches of own choice, minimum 4 parts each
Player to submit 3 of each tune in Elements 1 & 2 (MSR) for judge to choose

Piobaireachd – Players to submit 3 full tunes of their own choice and to play one full tune of the judge’s selection

B Grade
Element 1  2/4 March of 4 parts or more (submit 2 tunes for judge to choose from)
Element 2  Strathspey and Reel, minimum 4 parts each (submit only one of each)
Element 3  8 parts of Jig time. Tunes can be either 2, 4, 6 or 8 parts. Can be any jig time signature (i.e. 6/8, 9/8, 12/8)

Piobaireachd – Players to submit 2 tunes from the Set list and will be required to play 1 full tune of the judge’s selection.

C Grade
Element 1  2/4 March of 4 parts or more

2019 Victorian Championships (PLC)

A grade
Element 1 – MSR, submit 3 of each tune for judge to choose (At the conclusion of the March stop playing, retune and then play S&R)
Element 2 – Hornpipe & Jig, each of 4 parts or more
Submit 3 of each tune for judge to choose (3x Hornpipe, 3x Jig)

Piobaireachd – Players to submit 3 full tunes of their own choice and to play one full tune of the judge’s selection

B grade
Element 1 – 2/4 March (submit 2 tunes, judge to choose 1)
Element 2 – Strathspey & Reel, each of 4 parts or more (submit 2 sets for judge to choose)
