The VPA is proud to present our second Victorian Championships recital this year on Friday July 26th 2023 at PLC Burwood. Doors open 6.30pm for a 7pm start.

Our recitalists will be Alasdair Henderson and Neil Walker.

Alasdair Henderson is the Pipe Sergeant for two-time World Pipe Band Champions, Inverary and District Pipe Band. He is instrumental in the band’s musical arrangements and part of the backbone of one of the World’s consistent top performers.

Alasdair’s solo record is exemplary. He has won both the Gold Medal at the Northern Meeting and the Argyllshire Gathering, the Former Winners MSR at Oban, the MSR at the Masters Contest, and third place in the MSR at the Glenfiddich Championship.

Our second recitalist is Neil Walker.

Neil has been a regular competitor at the world’s premier solo piping competitions at the Argyllshire Gathering in Oban and the Northern Meeting in Inverness for many years.
Neil’s principal prizes on the solo circuit include the following:
  • Placed twice in Silver Medal at Argyllshire Gathering in Oban.
  • Winner of ‘A’ Grade Marches at Argyllshire Gathering in Oban.
  • Winner of March and Strathspey & Reel events and Overall Champion at Braemar Gathering.
  • Winner of ‘A’ Grade March, Strathspey and Reel at Northern Meeting in Inverness.
  • Winner of ‘A’ Grade March, Strathspey and Reel and 2nd in Gold Medal Piobaireachd at R.U. Brown Gold Medal Competition in Adelaide.
Following his light music successes at Oban in 2011 and Inverness in 2016, Neil is qualified to compete in the elite level Former Winners March, Strathspey and Reel event at both contests.
In addition to his solo career, Neil also has extensive Pipe Band experience having played at Grade 1 level with Strathclyde Police Pipe Band, Shotts & Dykehead Pipe Band and WA Police Pipe Band.
In 2013, Neil moved from Scotland to Perth, Western Australia to join WA Police Band as a Band Officer where he remains to this day.
Neil was recently appointed Pipe Sergeant of the WA Police Pipe Band and Lead Coordinator of the WA Police Youth Development Pipe Band.
In May 2024, after a hiatus of almost 5 years, Neil made a successful return to the competition scene at the R.U. Brown Gold Medal Competition in Adelaide by winning the ‘A’ Grade MSR and placing 2nd in the Gold Medal Piobaireachd event.
Neil is very much looking forward to attending the Victorian Championships for the first time.
